Service Description
Maplewood Arts was founded to provide Classical skills-based training, promote visual literacy, and to advance the understanding that great art begins with great themes expressed through mastery. Each session this summer will be centered around an artistic theme and offer students the opportunity to work alongside a professional artist, have a firsthand experience of the school’s "expression through mastery” pedagogy, and to join the studio's community. This workshop is designed to provide teenagers with a comprehensive understanding of the basic principles and techniques of creating characters for various media such as animation, comics, and games. Over the course of the week, participants will learn various skills and techniques that will enable them to create original and dynamic characters that have their own unique personality, backstory and appeal. Throughout the workshop, our experienced instructors will provide step-by-step guidance and feedback to help students develop their skills. The workshop will cover a range of topics, including character anatomy, design principles, gesture and expression, and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to experiment with different tools, such as pencils, markers, and colored pencil. Students will focus on personality and expression plus learn anatomy and posing using the human body as reference; and have a chance to explore costume design for their character. By the end of the workshop, students will have completed a number of original character designs, ranging from sketches to fully-realized pieces. They will leave with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of character design, as well as a newfound appreciation for the power of visual storytelling. In addition to the technical skills they will learn, participants will also have the opportunity to engage with other teens who share their interest in art and storytelling. They will be able to share ideas, learn from each other, and develop lasting friendships. We believe that every student has the potential to be an artist, and we are excited to help teens discover their own unique style and artistic voice in the field of character design. Join us for an unforgettable week of creativity, exploration, and inspiration! * Each session will focus on a different theme, projects will not repeat, - and if taken again - will increase in complexity. For this reason students may register for more than one summer session.
