Service Description

Maplewood Arts was founded to provide Classical skills-based training, promote visual literacy, and to advance the understanding that great art begins with great themes expressed through mastery. Each session this summer will be centered around an artistic theme and offer students the opportunity to work alongside a professional artist, have a firsthand experience of the school’s "expression through mastery” pedagogy, and to join the studio's community. This workshop is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the basic principles and techniques of working with colored pencils. Over the course of the week, participants will learn various skills and techniques that will enable them to create their own artwork, express their creativity, and develop their own personal style. Throughout the workshop, our experienced instructors will provide step-by-step guidance and feedback to help students develop their skills. The workshop will cover a range of topics, including color theory, shading, layering, blending, and more. Participants will also have the opportunity to experiment with different types of colored pencils, paper surfaces, and techniques such as layering, burnishing, blending, shading with contrasts, hatching and stippling. By the end of the workshop, students will have completed a number of original pieces, ranging from sketches to finished colored pencil drawings. They will leave with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of colored pencil artmaking, as well as a newfound appreciation for the unique properties of this medium. In addition to the technical skills they will learn, participants will also have the opportunity to engage with others who share their interest in art. They will be able to share ideas, learn from each other, and develop lasting friendships. We believe that every student has the potential to be an artist, and we are excited to help teens discover their own unique style and artistic voice through the use of colored pencils. Join us for an unforgettable week of creativity, exploration, and inspiration! *Each session will focus on a different theme, projects will not repeat, - and if taken again - will increase in complexity. For this reason students may register for more than one summer session. Artists of all levels are welcome and will be grouped by age and ability. Appropriate for ages 10 - 18.
