Maplewood Arts was founded to provide Classical skills-based training, promote visual literacy, and to advance the understanding that great art begins with great themes expressed through mastery. Each session this summer will be centered around an artistic theme and offer students the opportunity to work alongside a professional artist, have a firsthand experience of the school’s "expression through mastery” pedagogy, and to join the studio's community. This workshop is designed to provide pre-teens and teenagers with a comprehensive understanding of how to use ink-wash and pen & ink to create engaging artwork. Over the course of the week, participants will learn various skills and techniques that will enable them to create their own artwork, express their creativity, and develop their own personal style Throughout the workshop, our experienced instructors will provide step-by-step guidance and feedback to help students develop their skills. The workshop will cover a range of topics, including technical introduction to pen & ink, strategies for making a inked piece and media handling, creating shadows, vacant highlights, hatching, cross hatching, washes, layering, stippling, value, and visual expression. By the end of the workshop, students will have completed a number of original pieces, ranging from sketches to "practice pieces" to finished paintings. They will leave with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of painting and drawing, as well as a newfound appreciation for the power of art and mastery of skill. In addition to the technical skills they will learn, participants will also have the opportunity to engage with other teens who share their interest in art. They will be able to share ideas, learn from each other, and develop lasting friendships. We believe that every student has the potential to be an artist, and we are excited to help teens discover their own unique style and artistic voice. Join us for an unforgettable week of creativity, exploration, and inspiration! Each session will focus on a different theme, projects will not repeat, - and if taken again - will increase in complexity. For this reason students may register for more than one summer session. Artists of all levels are welcome and will be grouped by age and ability. Appropriate for ages 10 - 18.
For year-round classes: Students may make up one missed class every 30 days up to three per year. Make ups must be completed within 30 days of the missed class and reserved at least 24 hours in advance. Monetary refunds will not be issued for missed classes. Week-long summer sessions: May be refunded if canceled more than 7 days prior to the start of the session. Any summer sessions cancelled due to low enrollment will be offered a full refund.
