Maplewood Arts was founded to provide Classical skills-based training, promote visual literacy, and to advance the understanding that great art begins with great themes expressed through mastery. Each session this summer will be centered around an artistic theme and offer students the opportunity to work alongside a professional artist, have a firsthand experience of the school’s “expression through mastery” pedagogy, and to join the studio's community. This workshop is designed to provide teenagers with a comprehensive understanding of the basic principles and techniques of painting with watercolors. Over the course of the week, participants will learn various skills and techniques that will enable them to create their own artwork, express their creativity, and develop their own personal style. Throughout the workshop, our experienced instructors will provide step-by-step guidance and feedback to help students develop their skills and reach their full potential. The workshop will cover a range of topics, including strategies for making a watercolor piece, media handling, working 'backwards', layering shadows, and multiple methods for creating marks and mood. By the end of the workshop, students will have completed a number of original pieces, ranging from sketches to finished paintings. They will leave with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of watercolor painting, as well as a newfound appreciation for the unique properties of this medium. In addition to the technical skills they will learn, participants will also have the opportunity to engage with others who share their interest in art. They will be able to share ideas, learn from each other, and develop lasting friendships. We believe that every student has the potential to be an artist, and we are excited to help teens discover their own unique style and artistic voice through the use of watercolors. Join us for an unforgettable week of creativity, exploration, and inspiration! * Each session will focus on a different theme, projects will not repeat, - and if taken again - will increase in complexity. For this reason students may register for more than one summer session. Artists of all levels are welcome and will be grouped by age and ability. Appropriate for ages 10 - 18.
For year-round classes: Students may make up one missed class every 30 days up to three per year. Make ups must be completed within 30 days of the missed class and reserved at least 24 hours in advance. Monetary refunds will not be issued for missed classes. Week-long summer sessions: May be refunded if canceled more than 7 days prior to the start of the session. Any summer sessions cancelled due to low enrollment will be offered a full refund.
